Jerry L. Miculek

Hello, my name is Jerry L. Miculek, and I like to think of myself as one of the most versatile shooters in the world. I have shot all kind of guns from antique flintlock rifles to a belt-fed World War II machinegun, and I’ve gained lots of experience thorough the years. Guns are what I do, and I know them as well as anybody else.

I’m not going to tell you a bunch of nonsense about how I used to be a Navy SEAL, or how I fought in Afghanistan. I’m just a regular guy who likes guns.

My Shooting Background

I’ve been behind a rifle for over 25 years, starting with target shooting and progressing into precision long-range work. I’ve competed in everything from local 3-gun competitions to 1000-yard precision rifle matches. My experience spans multiple shooting disciplines including benchrest, F-Class, practical rifle competitions, and traditional hunting scenarios.

I’ve always enjoyed target shooting, and I’ve been hunting every year since my dad took me out as a kid. Over time, I’ve accumulated a large collection of firearms spanning multiple calibers from .17 HMR to .338 Lapua Magnum, and I’ve shot with many more. If it goes bang, I will shoot it.

Optics Expertise

My passion for optics runs deep – I’ve tested and reviewed over 200 different scopes, rangefinders, and spotting scopes across all price ranges. From budget-friendly 3-9x hunting scopes to high-end tactical optics costing thousands, I’ve put them through their paces in real-world conditions. I’ve worked with scopes from every major manufacturer including Leupold, Vortex, Nightforce, Schmidt & Bender, Zeiss, and many others.

I understand the technical aspects of optics – tracking accuracy, glass quality, reticle subtensions, turret mechanics, and parallax adjustment. I’ve tested scopes in everything from freezing Canadian winters during moose hunts to scorching desert conditions during precision rifle competitions. I know what separates a reliable scope from a pretty one that will fail when you need it most.

Gun Cleaning and Maintenance

Over the decades, I’ve learned that proper gun cleaning and maintenance is just as important as marksmanship itself. I’ve cleaned everything from delicate antique firearms to modern precision rifles that demand meticulous care to maintain their accuracy. I understand the specific cleaning requirements for different calibers, barrel materials, and action types.

I’ve tested dozens of cleaning products, solvents, oils, and tools – from traditional Hoppe’s No. 9 to modern copper-removing chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners. I know which products work best for different types of fouling, whether it’s powder residue, copper buildup, or lead deposits. I’ve also learned the hard way what products and techniques can damage your firearm if used incorrectly.

My cleaning routine varies depending on the gun’s intended use. A hunting rifle that sees occasional use requires different maintenance than a competition rifle that fires hundreds of rounds per session. I’ve developed efficient cleaning protocols that preserve accuracy while extending barrel life, and I’m always happy to share these techniques with fellow shooters.

Real-World Experience

I used to work a normal job for a living. Shooting was a hobby, a way to relax after a hard day’s work. In season, I would hunt deer, black bear, elk, moose, coyote, and brown bear – pretty much anything you can hunt on the North American continent! My longest confirmed harvest was a mule deer at 487 yards using a custom 6.5 Creedmoor with a Leupold VX-5HD scope.

I’ve also spent countless hours at the range working with different cartridges, testing handloads, and evaluating how different optics perform with various ammunition. This hands-on experience gives me insights you won’t find in manufacturer specifications.

Now that I’m “retired” – I hate that word – I mainly shoot and write reviews here.

When I have free time, I train aspiring shooters, focusing heavily on proper scope selection, zeroing procedures, understanding ballistics, and proper firearm maintenance. I’m a big stickler for gun safety, and I feel that it’s important to start with the fundamentals. Once you know how to operate a gun safely, understand your optics, and maintain your equipment properly, you’re ready to have fun on the range or go hunting.

Why Optics and Maintenance Matter

I like to write and give advice mainly on rifle scopes, but also gun cleaning. Scopes are near and dear to me because – along with the gun itself – they’re one of the only pieces of equipment that really matters. There’s a ton of “tacticool” equipment out there, from bipods to flashlights. People sometimes spend hundreds of dollars on gear that does nothing to improve their performance.

A scope, on the other hand, is critical. If it doesn’t function properly, you won’t be able to hit your target consistently. When you’re staring down the barrel at a grizzly bear, you want to be 100% sure that your bullet will land where your crosshairs indicate. This means using optics that are durable, reliable, hold zero, and are properly zeroed.

Similarly, a dirty or poorly maintained rifle won’t shoot to its potential, no matter how good your optics are. Proper cleaning preserves accuracy, prevents corrosion, and ensures reliable function when it matters most.

A quality scope and proper maintenance are equally important for competitive shooting. In a sport where victories are measured in millimeters, you need optics with precise tracking and rifles that perform consistently shot after shot.

You are welcome to ask for my advice – I am always willing to help. My motto is “if you want to get to the next level, you should be the first one on the shooting range and the last one to leave. Determination is the key!” So is having the right equipment and keeping it in top condition.
